About Px HealthCare
Px HealthCare develops mobile health solutions for people with cancer, providing them with individualised, practical support and self-reporting tools in order to improve patient-doctor conversations. Patient-reported data enables doctors to adjust treatments more effectively when necessary. It also gives back to future patients: user data is fully anonymised (Px HealthCare does not have any personal details of its users) and aggregated in order to conduct health outcomes research.

Px HealthCare’s initial focus is on breast cancer, which affects so many women and carries with it a significant mental and physical impact. The product line will be expanded to address other types of cancer in the near future. Through the website (www.owise.uk) and the OWise mobile app, Px HealthCare offers women (and men) smart online tools that help them gain insight into and control over their situation during and after illness.

As a Research and Development organisation, Px HealthCare aims to improve the treatment and diagnosis of (breast) cancer by conducting high quality research into disease subtypes and treatments, as well as lifestyle, environmental and genetic factors. The company collects the fully anonymised data that users enter via the app and website and uses the aggregated data for medical research, identifying correlations between medication and side effects, as well as drug-drug interactions in a real-life setting. In the long term, Px HealthCare aims to gain insight into how environmental factors affect the genome and how diseases such as breast cancer can be prevented or treated more effectively. Founded in 2012, Px HealthCare is a life sciences company that puts patients first by providing them with support tools that make a real difference to their quality of life. Px HealthCare is focused on data-analytics, collecting longitudinal and clinical field data to gain essential insight into the effectiveness of cancer treatments. Px HealthCare's goals are to:
Px HealthCare was founded by Dr. Anne Bruinvels, who has devoted much of her international career to the development of more effective, personalised drug treatments and diagnostic tools. In 2015 Anne was appointed as one of NHS England’s 17 Innovation Accelerator Fellows. This means that with the help of NHS England she is working to support the more than 40,000 breast cancer patients in the country with OWise: breast cancer. The 'Px' of Px HealthCare stands for ‘patient experience’, emphasising the company’s commitment to improving both patient experience and health outcomes using smart mobile technology.

Px HealthCare is based in London (UK) and has a wholly owned subsidiary based in Amsterdam (the Netherlands) where products are initially developed and tested before being rolled out in other European (and non-European) countries. The collection of data worldwide is extremely useful for conducting health outcomes research and for gaining a better understanding of the factors that contribute to the development of illnesses such as cancer and other chronic diseases. Px HealthCare and medical research
Approximately 5-8% of women with breast cancer have a genetic predisposition to the disease. However, for the vast majority of women with breast cancer, the causes of cancer are not well understood. Scientists believe that a multitude of factors play a role, with unfortunate combinations of these factors causing breast cancer. There is evidence that factors such as starting to menstruate at an early age or pregnancy at a late age may play a role, but this does not explain whether or what type of breast cancer one may get. In addition to genetic factors, environmental factors (e.g. where one lives and a person’s lifestyle) may have an effect on someone’s genetic material (DNA), which may in turn result in the development of breast cancer.

Px HealthCare’s long-term aim is to better understand how environmental factors affect a person's DNA. This is a scientific field called epigenetics. We study the influence of environmental factors on the DNA of people with diseases such as breast cancer in order to identify the mechanisms that cause the diseases. We require full informed consent from OWise users to contribute to this research.

Px HealthCare’s short-term aim is to investigate the occurrence of adverse events related to prescription drugs and the effects of different drug combinations in diseases such as breast cancer; we also study the impact of certain lifestyle factors. All user data is completely anonymous. This means that Px HealthCare has neither the full names of users nor their dates of birth. E-mail addresses are one-way encrypted and are not kept in the company's files. Furthermore, all login details are kept strictly separated from the user data.

User data are owned by an independent foundation called Px for Life. The purpose of the foundation is to protect and safeguard the user data at all times.
